Can SuccessFactors Become Your Internal Social Network?

Today, SuccessFactors entered the social collaboration sphere through the launch of Employee Central. SuccessFactors has previously developed social collaboration capabilities within its SuccessFactors Customer Community and it looks like they have replicated some of that functionality into Employee Central.

Although limited in its social collaboration capabilities (only social networking and tagging is available), Employee Central brings together core HR transactional capabilities (new employees, terminations, personnel data) with talent management information (performance ratings, career development, goals management) and social interactions ("connecting", tagging for quick search).

So the question...can SuccessFactors become your internal social network?  Can it become a corporate social network on steroids that includes key talent information (performance, skills, etc.)?

Jason - good question.  While I think the SFSF approach is unique and interesting, I don't think that it will replace FB/Twitter/linkedIn.  The social networks that have gained acceptance have a large lead, and the reason people use those networks - as you do, many other KI folks do - is that it's platform agnostic, easy to use and addresses a need.  The size of the networks - how many users have adopted this (e.g. pretty much every marketing team is using Twitter) is part of the value.

In order for people to make a switch, you need a compeling reason (aka - problem or pain).  I'm not sure that exists today - if you are speaking with clients who think there is a problem, that would be interesting to learn.

I don't see a compelling reason for users to switch to SFSF - at this time.

    Regards, Zeev.

    Hi Jason,

I sort of agree with Zeev on this.  I've only seen the video and read SF's blurb, but the application still seems very focused on providing managerial information.  While this is the case, it's likely to lack a real and compelling basis for employees to give it more than a passing glance.  OK they're likely to add their career aspirations here if this is going to be key to them getting picked up by succession planning.  But I don't think this is going to be enough for this to become a real social productivity tool for them.

Still, it's one more step in the right direction, and puts SF well ahead of most other vendors in this area.

    Cheers, Jon.
