Twitter's Amazing Growth Isn't Very Sticky

There's a strange dichotomy currently taking place around perceptions of Twitter.  Mainstream news and media outlets are embracing Twitter.  Celebrities like Oprah and Ashton Kutcher tweet regularly.  Yet despite Twitter's initial explosive growth in unique visitors, according to research conducted by the Nielsen organization, the majority of Twitter users don't stick around very long.

Factoid:  "60% of Twitter users end up abandoning the service after one month"  David Martin, Vice President, Primary Research, Nielsen Online

According the Nielsen research,  a 40% retention rate is far below that of other popular social media sites Facebook and MySpace:

The Friday Factoid has been a regular feature at KI since the inception of the company.

A post from the field by the Factoid's Senior Philanthropy Correspondent Bryon Abramowitz:

Earlier this week the Chicago-area KI staff volunteered to help the Northern Illinois Food Bank in the local front on the war on hunger.  The team helps with making boxes, sorting frozen meat, and packing various containers full of food which were then shipped to various food distribution sites throughout northern Illinois.  The operation runs like a well oiled machine, consisting mostly of volunteers many of whom were helping out for the first time.

In order to quickly ramp up new volunteers to achieve full productivity quickly, the Food Bank has created a very effective on-boarding program which takes only 15 minutes to run through.  After a 15 minute orientation, the volunteers are assigned to a work station and quickly shown exactly what needs to be done.  It’s hard to believe, but within 30 minutes of walking in the door for the first time we all were running at 100% productivity.  Think about how long it takes someone to reach full productivity at your place of business?  How does it compare?

This being the Friday Factoid, we would be remiss if we didn’t have some facts to share as well:

About the Northern Illinois Food Bank:
Northern Illinois Food Bank, a non-profit, 501(c)(3) charity organization and member of Feeding America (formerly America's Second Harvest - The Nation's Food Bank Network) was founded in May 1983 in Wheaton, Illinois and distributed 7,000 pounds of food in its first month. NIFB has grown tremendously in the past 26 years - distributing more than 22.5 million pounds of food in 2008 and currently serving over 520 food-assistance sites in 13 northern Illinois counties.
  • The Northern Illinois Food Bank services over a quarter of a million households, distributing over 22 million pounds of food annually.
  • 33% of the members of households served by the Northern Illinois Food Bank are children under 18 years old.
  • 7% of the members of households served by the Northern Illinois Food Bank are children age 0 to 5 years.
  • 38% of households include at least 1 employed adult
  • 67.7% of the client’s households have an income of 130% or below the federal poverty level
  • 7% are homeless

One in every Eleven people is Food Insecure, meaning they do not have regular access to enough safe, nutritious food for an active and healthy life.

Last month we launched our KI Philanthropy program that included regional KI Volunteers events that each team will be participating in over the next few weeks.

Here's an update on the different organizations that each regional team will be supporting. As events happen over the next few weeks, stay tuned for updates on how each went and what the teams did.

Boston: Cradles to Crayons, an innovative organization that equips homeless and in-need children with the basic essentials they need to feel safe, warm, ready to learn and thrive.

San Francisco: Kids Enjoy Exercise Now where volunteers are paired up with KEEN athletes who have disabilities such as autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and various intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Los Angeles:  Beagles & Buddies an organization that rescues purebread and mixed Beagles, as well as other hounds and small dogs from pounds, humane societies and off the street.

Minneapolis:  Operation Backpack, a Volunteers of America of Minnesota program that provides new backpacks and school supplies for low-income children and teens throughout the state of Minnesota.

Chicago:  Northern Illinois Food Bank Founded in 1983, Northern Illinois Food Bank is the link between the national food manufacturers and local agencies that serve the hungry directly. NIFB acquires, gathers, handles, and distributes food to over 250,000 hungry people annually throughout the greater Chicagoland area.

Las Vegas:   Three Square Backpack Program, an organization that provides a bag of kid-friendly, shelf-stable foods to children who lack adequate food over the weekend.

Virtual Team:  Each team member is going to volunteer with their local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity

Here at the Factoid megaplex, many of us have been curious as to why we never hear our kids, nieces, nephews, etc... squawking about Twitter.  Our recent Factoid staff meeting turned into an impromptu research flurry that turned up the following numbers on who actually uses Twitter.

Contrary to popular perception, Twitter use is actually a middle-aged phenomenon with users over age 35 making up almost 60% of the user population.  Stats compliments of the folks at Nielsen:

This week the Markie Foundation will hold its 10th Annual Golf Tournament to benefit children's hospice programs in Northern California. The Markie Foundation is an organization near to hearts and one we are proud to have supported the past five years. Joe and Janis Wuelfing, founders of the Markie Foundation and close members of the Knowledge Infusion family, have done an amazing job raising more than $250,000 to help families receive quality hospice services needed while caring for a terminally ill child at home.

Joe and Janis, thank you for showing us true compassion, honor, and appreciation of life.  YOU are KI!
