Interesting report out from Neilsen Mobile states that:

  • For the second quarter of 2008, U.S. mobile subscribers sent and received on average 357 text messages per month, compared with making and receiving 204 phone calls a month, according to Nielsen. The new statistic is a clear indication that Americans have jumped onto the SMS text bandwagon.
  • For the month of June 2008, American cell phone subscribers sent about 75 billion SMS text messages, averaging about 2.5 billion messages per day. This represents an increase of 160 percent over the 28.8 billion messages reported in June 2007.

Another infusion of knowledge...

Jason,

As a case example on this topic, my teenage niece recently racked up a $500 cell phone bill as a result of the 1500+ text messages she sent to a new boyfriend.  While this provided some nice shock value for my sister and her husband, I think the story shows the direction of communication mediums and how technology is reshaping the way we communicate.  As this next generation enters the workforce, it will be imperative that we accept and embrace these tools to mirror day to day life.  As a side note, I've suggested that my sister sign up for the unlimited text message plan to avoid this situation in the future.

Is the future unlimited text messaging (SMS) or unlimited web browsing?  Which do you think will be more pervasive?
